How to Cancel British Gas in 2026
To cancel British Gas energy, sign up with a new supplier and they arrange the switch for you, or call British Gas to close the account if you are moving out. To cancel British Gas HomeCare boiler cover, you contact British Gas directly by phone or online chat. Cancelling the Direct Debit at your bank does not end the agreement on its own.
Short answer: "British Gas" is really two different things. Energy supply cancels by switching or moving out. HomeCare boiler and appliance cover is a subscription you cancel by contacting British Gas. Pick the one you actually pay for.

There is no App Store or Google Play billing here. British Gas charges you by Direct Debit straight from your bank, so there is no third-party subscription to cancel through Apple or Google. That also means stopping the Direct Debit at your bank does not cancel the contract. It just stops a payment, and the account can go into arrears. Verify current terms before you act, because tariffs and cover terms change.
Which British Gas are you cancelling?
Two products, two routes:
- Energy supply (gas and electricity for your home). You do not usually cancel this directly. You switch to another supplier, or you close the account when you move out.
- HomeCare (boiler cover, heating, plumbing and drains, home electrics). This is a rolling policy paid monthly or annually by Direct Debit. You cancel it by contacting British Gas.
How do I cancel British Gas energy?
You rarely phone to "cancel" energy. Under Ofgem switching rules, your new supplier handles the switch and tells British Gas. Here is the clean way to do it.
- Check your current tariff first. Log in to your British Gas online account or the app and look at your plan. If you are on a fixed tariff and still inside the fixed term, there may be an exit fee, often around GBP 30 per fuel. Illustrative example. Results vary and are not guaranteed. Variable tariffs usually have no exit fee.
- Pick a new supplier and sign up with them. Do not contact British Gas to start this. Your new supplier contacts British Gas and arranges the switch, usually within about five working days.
- You get a 14-day cooling-off period on the new contract. You can cancel the switch in that window, or waive it to move faster.
- Submit a final meter reading when asked. Your new supplier sends the reading to British Gas, who use it to produce your final bill. Keep a photo of the meter with the date.
- Settle the final bill. If you are in credit, British Gas refunds you, usually back through your Direct Debit within a few weeks. If you owe money, they collect it the same way.
What if I am moving home?
Moving out is different from switching. You are closing the account at that address, not choosing a new supplier. Tell British Gas you are moving, ideally around two weeks before, through the home-move section of the britishgas.co.uk website or by phone. Give them your move-out date and a closing meter reading. They close the account and send a final bill, typically within about four weeks. Do not just stop paying and walk away, or you can stay liable for usage after you have gone.
How do I cancel British Gas HomeCare boiler cover?
This is the subscription most people mean when they type "cancel British Gas." The cancel option is not a tidy button buried in the app. You contact British Gas Services and tell them to cancel.
- Have your policy number and account details ready. Find them on your policy documents or in your online account.
- Contact British Gas HomeCare. The usual routes are the HomeCare help line and the online chat you reach from the help and support pages of britishgas.co.uk. Some accounts can manage or stop the renewal inside the online account, but a phone or chat cancellation is the reliable path.
- Say clearly that you want to cancel the cover, not pause it or downgrade it. Ask for a cancellation reference or email confirmation.
- Expect a retention pitch. Cover often renews at a higher price, and the agent may offer a discount or a cheaper plan to keep you. You do not have to accept. "No, please cancel it" is a full sentence.
- Check the refund. Inside the 14-day cooling-off period after the cover starts or renews, you get a full refund, minus the cost of any work already carried out. After 14 days, cancelling before the term ends usually means a refund for the unused time, but if an engineer has already visited, cancellation charges can apply.
Do I keep cover until the end of the period?
Broadly yes for a paid-up term. If you cancel mid-term after the cooling-off window, British Gas cancels from the date you tell them and refunds the remaining time you have already paid for, subtracting charges for any work done. Confirm the exact figure on your own policy, because HomeCare tiers differ.
The Direct Debit gotcha
Do not cancel the Direct Debit at your bank and assume you are done. British Gas states that cancelling the Direct Debit does not automatically cancel the agreement. If a payment fails, they can keep trying to collect and only cancel the policy after a set period, leaving you with an outstanding balance and a mark on the account. Cancel the contract first, get confirmation, then check the Direct Debit is stopped.
British Gas cancellation methods compared
| Method | Best for | Effort | Speed | Outcome |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Switch supplier (energy) | Leaving British Gas energy for a better deal | Low. New supplier does the work | About 5 working days | Old account closed automatically after final read |
| Phone or chat (HomeCare) | Ending boiler or home cover | Medium. Expect a retention pitch | Same call | Cover cancelled; refund per policy terms |
| Moving-home form or phone | Closing an account when you move out | Low to medium | Final bill in about 4 weeks | Account closed at that address |
| Put Karen on it | You want the cancellation and any refund pushed for you | Low. You hand it over | Karen starts right away | Karen contacts British Gas and pursues it. Outcome is not guaranteed |
What if British Gas keeps charging me after I cancel?
It happens. A Direct Debit runs one more cycle, or a "cancelled" HomeCare policy quietly renews. First, get your cancellation confirmation and the date in writing. If a charge lands after that date and British Gas will not refund it, you can raise a formal complaint, and you have the option to dispute the charge with your card or bank if you paid on a card, or challenge the Direct Debit under the Direct Debit Guarantee. If a company will not return money you are owed, see what to do when a company will not refund you. For the wider playbook, start at the refunds hub.
